week 33: exhibition 35 years STIEL
MW architectuur - together with many others - will organise an exhibition about STIEL and its significance for the city of Leiden.
After 35 years, STIEL will cease to exist in September 2022. In those 35 years, STIEL has dedicated itself to the revaluation, reallocation and reuse of industrial buildings in the city. The greatest achievement has been the rescue of the Meelfabriek, for which a demolition permit was already being prepared in 1987. Thanks to STIEL's tireless efforts, this extraordinary complex was saved and is now one of the most extraordinary places in Leiden where the industrial past is still tangible.
Now that so many buildings and objects have been saved in part by STIEL, the preservation, restoration and reuse of industrial buildings has become more commonplace. The need for an action group like STIEL has therefore diminished, reason for STIEL to disband after 35 years.
The exhibition - which will be on display during the Open Monument Days on 10 and 11 September - will be opened during a Heritage Café about STIEL.
